Let’s be honest: choosing a deodorant shouldn’t be a complicated endeavour. But I bet I’m not the only one who found herself  standing in the personal care aisle, completely overwhelmed by the sheer number of options.

Should I get a stick or a roll-on? What’s the most sustainable and healthy option? What will actually make me smell ok after a long hot day of dragging my toddler around?

Some might think, wasted time to worry about such a luxury problem. But my opinion: What if being a bit fussy about your deodorant choice is actually the sensible approach?

We want something that’s good for us, our lifestyle and our planet. Because let’s be honest – a deodorant that works AND fulfills all important criteria can make a huge difference!

From kitchen table to armpits worldwide

Sometimes the best ideas start with a simple observation. When the founders of Fussy noticed the ridiculous amounts of single-use plastic cluttering up bathroom cabinets everywhere, they had one of those “surely there’s a better way” moments. Turns out, there absolutely is.

What began as a kitchen table conversation became a Kickstarter success in October 2020, with over 8,000 people (or rather, 8,000 pairs of armpits) signing up to the idea: a deodorant that didn’t require compromising eco conscious living for the sake of staying fresh.

But to be honest: All too often, choosing the sustainable option means accepting that it won’t work quite as well as the conventional alternative. It’s the classic “good for the planet, disappointing for everything else” scenario we’ve all experienced.

Fussy threw that assumption out the window.

Their case is made from recycled plastic and designed to last a lifetime, paired with practical refills.

They are plastic-free, made from waste sugarcane. Plus, with their flexible subscription service, fresh refills arrive every three months without having to think about it.

I chose their Cloud Nine scent: a soothing blend of cotton, sandalwood, and vetiver that makes me feel like floating on, well, cloud nine.

Fussy is B Corp certified and carbon neutral, working with Climate Partner to support gold standard green energy projects worldwide. They’re also Leaping Bunny approved, which means they are cruelty-free and vegan standards, certified beyond basic legal requirements.

My personal hardcore test:

Imagine a hot August afternoon: working with painters tape in our loft conversion to get it ready for painting, then picking up a wriggly toddler from nursery, trying to get him into the pram, making a stop at the playground, then walking 20 min into the city to get ice cream, and then running some errands in town. Afterwards a stop at the hardware store to buy 20L of paint in total. All during a VERY sunny and warm day. On top of that, I chose the wrong outfit: my trousers and my t-shirt were a bit too thick.

The smell-test at 5:16pm – NOT shower fresh, but somehow I was only smelling like flowers – I wouldn’t describe it like cotton fresh, but truly like flowers. Maybe TMI but my husband did an armpit scent status test, too and said „not smelly at all, smells like flowers“ – and he is honest with these types of things

SUCCESS!

The bottom line

Being fussy about your deodorant isn’t about being over-complicated. It’s about recognising that you deserve a product that works reliably, feels comfortable, aligns with your values, and doesn’t contribute to the plastic crisis currently overwhelming our planet.

So go ahead, be Fussy. Your underarms, your favourite shirts, and the planet will thank you for it.
