Sustainable and Vegan Guide to Tokyo: Shopping and Food

Nach unserer tollen Kooperation mit People Tree in Nepal haben wir uns dazu entschieden, in Japan wieder zusammen zu arbeiten. Schließlich kommt People Tree aus Japan und hat seinen Hauptsitz hier in Tokyo! Am besten passte hierbei für uns ein Nachhaltigkeitsguide für Tokyo mit meinen liebsten Eco-Shops und veganen Restaurants!

Japan ist wirklich ein Nachhaltigkeitshimmel, doch nicht unbedingt das Paradies für Veganer – aber nur auf den ersten Blick! Mein Kooperationspartner People Tree hat mir Tipps gegeben, Jesse und ich haben viel recherchiert, ausprobiert und hier jetzt für euch zusammengefasst! Macht es euch also gemütlich, denn es folgt ein umfangreicher Guide zu meinen liebsten Food-Spots und Shopping-Tipps in Tokyo aus drei tollen Stadtteilen: Shibuya, Shinjuku und Jiyugaoka!

After our wonderful cooperation with People Tree in Nepal we decided to work together again while in Tokyo. After all, People Tree is based in Tokyo and it seemed like the perfect opportunity. We decided it would be wonderful to write a sustainability guide to Tokyo, including top ethical and organic places to shop and the best vegan food spots!

I am including three great neighborhoods in my Vegan Guide to Tokyo: Shibuya, Shinjuku and Jiyugaoka!

SHIBUYA

Shibuya ist der perfekte, zentrale Anlaufpunkt für euren Aufenthalt in Japan! Von hier aus kommt ihr wirklich prima überall hin, es ist ein sehr belebter und beliebter Stadtteil und trotzdem findet ihr ruhige Ecken.

Speziell in Shibuya gab es viele tolle vegane Optionen. Wir konnten noch nicht einmal alle abklappern und ich kann euch nicht wirklich sagen, welches Lokal mein Favorit war, da alle SO gut waren!

Shibuya is really the perfect area to stay. You can quickly get anywhere in the city, but you are right in the middle of the excitement in one of the most popular areas of Tokyo. However, you will still find quiet areas for your accommodation.

There were really good of choices for vegan or vegetarian food in the Shibuya area. We didn’t even manage to make it to all of them in our short time there. I really love all of the places listed below and it’s impossible to choose a favorite!

Vegan Food Tips:

Nagi Shokudo 

• Ein bisschen tricky zu finden, obwohl es wirklich nicht weit entfernt von der Station Shibuya ist. Ein kleines Schild “vegeatarian food” zeigte uns dann aber den Eingang. Hier findet ihr das typisch japanische Lunch-Set, aber komplett in veggie, zum größten Teil auch vegan. Jedes Set kommt mit einer Miso Suppe, Reis, Tee und man kann für die Gerichte aus 15 Optionen drei auswählen.
• A yummy little place that is right near Shibuya station, but still really hard to find. They offer the typical type of “set” lunch that you find in Japan, but with only vegetarian options (most of them vegan). Every set comes with a miso soup, rice as well as tea and you get the choice of three options from about 15. 

Brown Rice Organic Restaurant 

• Beim Spazieren durch die Harajuku-Gegend haben wir dieses Lokal nur zufällig gefunden und schon allein von außen sah es toll aus. Wir wurden nicht enttäuscht! Auch hier gab es ein typisches Lunch-Set komplett vegan mit Reis, Miso Suppe und frischen kleinen, verschiedenen Gerichten. Der Seitan dort war ein echtes Geschmackserlebnis und ich denke immer noch daran!!! Nachtisch gab es auch vegan!
• While wandering in the Harajuku area of Shibuya we came across it and it looked amazing. They also serve set lunches with rice, miso soup and the fresh dishes of the day. I fell in love with their seitan and couldn’t get enough of it! The desserts we had were also vegan!

Crayon House 

• Diesen Tipp findet ihr direkt gegenüber von Brown Rice, eigentlich eher ein Bio-Supermarkt mit Buffet-Lunch-Option. Und auch wenn es die Treppen runter geht, könnt ihr auf einer gemütlichen Außenterrasse sitzen! Schaut da einfach nachdem ihr im Brown Rice wart kurz vorbei 🙂
• This place is right across from Brown rice and more of an organic supermarket – lunch/buffet type place. It’s down a set of stairs and you can sit on a really nice cute terrace. 

Re:Nature 

• Hier hatten wir unser erstes typisch japanisches Lunch-Set-Erlebnis und ich war hin und weg! Schon allein wie schön das aussieht!!!
• This was our first experience with the typical Japanese “set” style of lunch. Similar to Brown Rice, they serve a set with three ‘deli’ items along with rice and soup. We really liked it a lot and enjoyed all the little different dishes.

Farmer’s Market @UNU

• DER COOLSTE MARKT EVER!!! Hier findet ihr frisches Obst und Gemüse, aber auch leckeres Essen, Food-Trucks sowie Handgemachtes – perfekt für Souvenir-Shopping! Ich hatte eine leckere Karottensuppe und ein köstliches, heißes, selbstgemachtes Ginger Ale (es war Winter, also brauchte ich warmes in Sachen Speis und Trank). Jesse hatte außerdem einen leckeren veganen Muffin und den obligatorischen Matcha!
• THE COOLEST FARMERS MARKET THAT I”VE EVER BEEN TO!!! Amazing fresh food as well as great stuff for sale. While there I had a yummy carrot soup and an awesome hot ginger ale (it was winter so I stuck to soup and warm drinks). Jesse also had a muffin and the requisite matcha.

Organic table by La Paz

• Hier haben wir es leider aus Zeitgründen nicht hin geschafft, aber ich wollte es trotzdem in dieser Liste einfügen, da das Restaurant sehr gut aussah!
• This was a place we had on our list but never made it to! Nevertheless, I wanted to include it as it sounded really good!

Shopping in Shibuya:

Cosme Kitchen

• Hier findet ihr alles was das Naturkosmetik-Herz begehrt! Nicht alles ist Made in Japan, ihr werdet auch Weleda & Co. entdecken, aber für die unbekannten Brands lohnt sich ein Besuch!
• Cosme Kitchen is a cosmetic store that sells only organic cosmetics. There were lots of familiar brands there, but also a few Made in Japan that you should definitely check out!

THREE

• Apropos Made in Japan – THREE findet ihr einen Stock tiefer und die Marke bietet Kosmetik Made in Japan mit hauptsächlich natürlichen Inhaltsstoffen. Anscheinend ist die Brand mega beliebt in Japan und einige Produkte oft schnell ausverkauft!
• speaking of Japanese cosmetic brands: Three is a super stylish and very popular Japanese makeup brand that uses locally sourced ingredients and mostly natural and organic ingredients.

Pass The Baton

• Einer der besten Vintage-Shops, die ich je besucht habe. Alle Stücke sind sehr bedacht ausgewählt und sehr fein – das sieht man sofort beim Betreten! Das spiegelt sich im Preisschild wider, was aber völlig gerechtfertigt war. 
• One of the nicest second hand stores I have ever been to. They offer a very eclectic style, but very well curated. But with that comes a rather hefty price tag (that I would have been willing to spend if I wasn’t a backpacker).

Kagure

• Ein sehr stylisher Fair Fashion Klamottenladen, mit Fokus auf Basics mit interessanten Schnitten. Gleichzeitig findet ihr dort auch schöne Interior-Accessoires!
• A stylish organic cotton clothing store that also offers some super fancy interior items! It’s not so easy to fin so I’ve included the Google location for you!

Second-Hand-Heaven in Harajuku

• Ich habe hier keinen bestimmten Ladentipp, da würde die Liste hier viiiiel zu lang werden. Denn ganz Harajuku ist voller toller Second-Hand-Läden, manche super günstig, manche mit Designerteilen. Wo ich geshoppt habe, war im Laden Chicago (da drum herum findet ihr auch alle anderen). Kein Wunder, dass die Japaner alle so stylisch sind, wenn bereits die ganzen Second-Hand-Läden so wunderbar sind!
• I don’t have one specific store to mention here, but just the area in general. There are so many great second hand stores with a great selection. I bought myself a kimono jacket for only 16 euros in a store called Chicago (all the others were near it)! No wonder the Japanese are so fashionable, even their second hand stores are amazing!

JIYUGAOKA

Das ist vielleicht eine Gegend, die nicht jeder Tourist auf dem Schirm hat. Es ist aber eine sehr trendige Ecke, mit vielen kleinen Boutiquen und ich liebe die Atmosphäre dort! Schon allein aufgrund des tollen Matchas (siehe unten) müsst ihr dort hin! Dort war auch das Büro von People Tree, so dass uns die liebe Fumi an einem Nachmittag herumgeführt hat. Wir sind noch ein zweites Mal zurück, weil ich die Gegend so sehr mochte und es auch cool fand, mal weg von den Touri-Gegenden zu kommen:

This is maybe not an area that most tourists visit. But it’s a really trendy area with lots of food and little boutiques and always busy! I LOVED the vibe there and went back twice! It’s where I found the best traditional tea house and also where People Tree is based. Lovely Fumi from People Tree gave us a little tour there and I really loved this area. I am so happy that we went a bit off of the “beaten” tourist path and therefore want to share it with you:

Clothing & Interior

People Tree

• Unter Umständen seid ihr höchstwahrscheinlich auch People Tree-Fans und shoppt die Sachen aber vermutlich hauptsächlich online. Wie schön ist es deshalb, in einen People-Tree-Laden spazieren und einfach alles anprobieren zu können? Falls ihr in der Gegend seid, empfehle ich euch dringend die People Tree Boutique! Dort findet ihr neben den bekannten Kollektionen auch Designer-Kollaborationen, die ihr sonst nirgends findet, Hochzeitsmode und sogar Schokolade made by People Tree!
• If you are one of my German readers and a People Tree fan you probably also mostly order their items online! But how nice is it, to actually be able to walk on one of their stores and try on all the different lovely pieces? The Japan store is totally worth a visit. You find unique designer collaboration that you won’t get anywhere else, bridal couture, underwear and even chocolate made by People Tree!

Pristine

• Dies ist eine Biobaumwoll-Marke, die sich auf Basics spezialisiert hat, alles in beigen Tönen gehalten! Das Unternehmen ist 100% made in Japan, färbt seine Stoffe nicht und achtet auf eine faire Wertschöpfungskette!
• is an organic cotton brand that focuses on basics and fabrics, all in beige and white tones! All is made in Japan, they don’t use any dyes and focus on an ethical production!

Katakana

• Hier habe ich eigentlich fast alle meine Geschenke für Freunde und Familie gekauft. Alles ist Made in Japan und da der Laden nicht auf Touristen fokussiert ist, findet ihr viele kleine, wunderbare Schätze, von denen ihr gar nicht wusstet, dass ihr sie wollt – wie einen super kleinen Mini-Kugelschreibe, der aber mega schick ist, gestickte Sushi Aufnäher und das coolste Briefpapier. Wir sind noch zweimal zurück!
• Here is where I bought most of my souvenirs for family and friends – everything is made in Japan but it’s not really focused to sell only for tourists but actually mostly for locals. That’s why I found the coolest stuff there like a super stylish mini pen, embroidered sushi patches and the coolest stationary. We went back twice!

Today’s Special

• Und hier habe ich fast den Rest all meiner Geschenke gefunden! Ein sehr schöner Laden, in dem es viel zu entdecken gibt! Nicht alles ist Made in Japan, da müsst ihr einfach aufs Label achten. Wir haben hier super süße Schälchen und andere Kleinigkeiten gefunden.
• And this is the other place where I found nearly the other half of all my Japan souvenirs 🙂 Here not all is made in Japan so just check the label or ask the shop assistant if you are unsure. We found super cute bowls, chopsticks and chopstick holders! You could call them a little concept design shop!

Antiques store Old Ones Nokosu

• Den Laden haben wir nur durch Zufall entdeckt und was für ein süßer Laden! Wären wir nicht mit Rucksäcken unterwegs, hätte ich ihn faktisch leer gekauft! Für alle Küchen- und Interior-Liebhaber ein MUSS. Was gibt es cooleres als z.B. Vintage-Besteck oder Vintage-Schälchen aus Japan??? Eine sehr große Empfehlung von mir!
• We basically stumbled over this little cute shop! If I wouldn’t have been on a world trip I would have bought SO much there! Second Hand kitchen accessories from Japan? I mean, who couldn’t resist??? Well, I had to, but we went back twice so that I can at least look around as much as I want even though I couldn’t buy more. A big recommendation by me!

Food

Koso-An tea house

• Für unseren Trip nach Japan habe ich mir eine sehr wichtige Sache vorgenommen: In einem traditionellen japanischen Teehaus Matcha trinken! Glücklicherweise wusste Fumi von diesem speziellen Teehaus und hat uns dortin geführt. Von außen erkennt man das Teehaus nicht sofort, aber eine kleine Suche lohnt sich! Denn dort hatten wir unser bestes Matcha-Erlebnis und schon allein nur für einen Besuch dieses Teehauses lohnt sich ein kleiner Abstecher nach Jiyugaoka!
• For our trip to Japan I had one thing that I had to experience: a traditional Japanese tea house! Lucky for us Fumi knew of this place and we got to visit the picture perfect tea house on our first day in Japan. This is a must do for anyone visiting Tokyo! It’s really what you imagine when going to Japan and drinking a traditional matcha tea! I went to many other tea houses but this one was my absolute favorite and it’s worth to go to Jiyugaoka just for this experience!

Leider haben wir es dort nicht in 100% vegane Lokale geschafft. Wir waren mit Fumi und Kollegen essen, die für uns auf japanisch alles vegan bestellt haben. Allein wäre das aber in diesen Restaurants schwierig. Fumi hat mir aber eine Karte geschrieben, auf der in Japanisch steht, dass ich Vegetarierin bin. Ein Bild davon findet ihr ganz unten!

Aber nächstes Mal würde ich diese beiden Restaurant ausprobieren: T’s restaurant & Kouso Ryouhin

Unfortunately we didn’t make it to any strictly veggie restaurants in this area. We wen’t out to eat, but with Fumi and James from People Tree to their favorite restaurants and as they spoke Japanes, were able to order everything vegan for me. However, if you don’t speak Japanese that might be a bit hard. On the bottom of this post I have a card for you, Fumi wrote me in Japanese saying I am vegetarian.

But next time I would check these two out: T’s restaurant & Kouso Ryouhin

SHINJUKU

Shinjuku ist auch eine richtig tolle Gegend! Hier haben wir vier Nächte verbracht, aber um ehrlich zu sein, wäre ich lieber in Shibuya geblieben (mehr dazu in einem anderen Blogpost) und stattdessen dann nach Shinjuku gefahren. Es ist echt sehr einfach in Tokyo von A nach B zu kommen. Shibuya und Jiyugaoka sind immer noch meine Favoriten, aber in Shinjuku habe ich auch tolle Restaurants und Shops gefunden:

Shinjuku is also a really cool and very popular area! We stayed there four nights but I think I would have preferred to stay all the days in Tokyo in Shibuya (more on that in another post though) and just travel to Shinjuku. It’s really easy to get around in Tokyo! Shibuya and Jiyugaoka are still my favorites but I also found really nice sustainable and vegan food choices in this area!

Vegan Food Hot-Spots

Ain Soph

• Ain Soph hat tatsächlich mehrere Lokale in Tokyo, aber wir haben nur das in Shinjuku getestet. Das Interieur ist sehr gemütlich und auch das Essen war sehr lecker. Leider nicht das typische Lunch-Set-Menu, in das ich mich verliebt habe, aber trotzdem sehr empfehlenswert!
• They actually have several Ain Soph restaurants in Tokyo but we went to the one in Shinjuku. It’s a really cute little place and we loved the food! However, when we were there they didn’t offer traditional style lunch set menus (which we always looked for) but it was delicious nonetheless.

Vegan at Doughnut Plant NYC

• Nach ein paar Stunden Internetrecherche hat Jesse das gefunden, was er unbedingt ausprobieren wollte: Doughnut Plant NYC, wo es neben frischen, konventionellen Donuts auch zwei Sorten vegane hab! Der kleine Stand war nur nicht leicht zu finden! Er liegt direkt in der Shinjuku Station, die eine Welt für sich ist. Falls ihr versuchen wollt, den Laden zu finden, dann schaut mal in der Station am Kabukicho Ausgang direkt neben dem Lumine Est Mall Eingang! Die Suche ist es aber wert, mein Erdbeer-Donut war SO gut!
• After a few hours or internet research Jesse had found a place he had to go to:Doughnut Plant NYC where they serve freshly made doughnuts with a few vegan options! It was an adventure to find though. It is located in Shinjuku station, which is like its own universe. For those of you trying to find it, it is located near the Kabukicho exit right near Lumine Est mall entrance. The quest is worth it! I looooved my strawberry doughnut!

Cafe Lima

• Dieses Cafe hat Jesse gefunden und es war sehr, sehr gut. Es ist direkt an einem Biosupermarkt angeschlossen (immer ein gutes Zeichen) und sie bieten sogar veganes Soft-Eis an. Wir hatten auch hier ein Set und auch hier war der Seitan göttlich!!!
• Jesse found this place and we loved it! It’s connected to an organic supermarket – always a good sign – and they even serve vegan soft ice. We had a lunch set and their seitan was amazing!!!

Chaya Macrobiotics Isetan Shinjuku

• Hier haben wir nicht gegessen, haben wir nicht geschafft, aber wir sind daran vorbei gelaufen und konnten so einen genauen Blick auf die Karte werfen. Sehr gesund, aber nicht alles veggie und auch kaum Japanische Gerichte. Aber, falls ihr in der Gegend und am Verhungern seid, schaut da unbedingt vorbei! 
• We actually didn’t eat there only walked past by and checked out the menu! Very healthy but not many vegan and Japanese options. However, if you are in the area and are hungry and don’t want to look too long, I recommend this one!

Stores

In Shinjuku waren wir nicht viel shoppen, wir waren eher spazieren oder am Essen 🙂 Aber eine Entdeckung möchte ich auf jeden Fall mit euch teilen:

Yoyogi Village ist eine kleine Concept Mall, ähnlich wie Bikini Berlin nur viel kleiner. Hier findet ihr kleine Läden, Cafes und ein Bio-Restaurant (nicht japanisch!).

I didn’t do much shopping in Shinjuku as we mostly just walked around, ate or went to the parks. But one place I was really excited about to discover while scouting for my vegan guide to Tokyo was Yoyogi Village.

Yoyogi Village is basically like a concept mall, similar to Bikini Berlin, with lots of different little shops cafes and an organic restaurant. It’s not super big but nice to stroll around after visiting one of the parks near Yoyogi station!

Wie oben erwähnt, ist der Blogpost in Zusammenarbeit mit den lieben Leuten von People Tree entstanden. Sie haben mir Tipps gegeben und mich rumgeführt. So habe ich Lokale und Shops entdeckt, die ich sonst nicht gefunden hätte.
